Holidays in Lanzarote have long been popular with tourists from the UK. With this small Canary Island welcoming well over 700,000 British visitors annually. Along with an abundance of guests from Spain, Germany and Eire too.
They are all drawn to this popular holiday island by a variety of factors. Encompassing great weather (temperatures on Lanzarote stay in the 20´s all year round), fantastic beaches (there are over 90 to explore) and some incredible attractions. Along with good quality accommodation options.
During the winter months the bulk of visitors tend to head for the southern end of Lanzarote and to the fast growing resort destination of Playa Blanca. Named after the small white beach that still lies at it heart this really was just a tiny fishing village until twenty years ago. When the obvious potential of the area came to the attention of hotel chains and property developers.
Today Playa Blanca is home to the largest selection of hotels in Lanzarote – as well as a huge array of rental accommodation. Villas in Playa Blanca are especially popular with British and Irish visitors – not least as they are very reasonably priced. Especially in relation to comprable destinations such as Ibiza and Mallorca.
Playa Blanca is basically comprised of three sheltered bays located within one much larger bay. And the entire resort is united by a seafront promenade, which is the place to stroll come sundown as tourists and locals alike head there for the nightly paseo. Before choosing a seafront restaurant for their evening meal.
Whilst Playa Blanca is the furthest resort from the airport – with a bearable transfer time of around forty minutes – it is the closest to the islands number one tourist attraction. The volcanic region of the Timanfaya National Park. And is also the gateway to the neighbouring Canary Island of Fuerteventura. With visitors able to hop on to ferries that run from the harbour area to Corralejo on the hour throughout the day.
Away from the resort Lanzarote offers plenty for visitors to do and see. Including the many creations of the local artist Cesar Manrique. Such as the Cactus Garden, Jameos del Agua and the Mirador del Rio. Plus his former home and studio – now the base of the Cesar Manrique Foundation. As well as lots of very pretty little villages and towns. Such as Haria, Yaiza and Maguez.
